Independent/Retirement Living

Expert Advice for Choosing Among Independent Senior and Retirement Living Options

Senior Living Options has a broad range of knowledge about independent senior living options and can provide insightful advice about retirement living choices. An independent senior living or retirement community is ideal for a healthy senior who is on the go and currently does not need any help with personal care.

These individuals and couples are often looking for relief from the upkeep of a home, or they might feel it is time to downsize and simplify their lives, or perhaps they are looking for companionship and want to feel part of a community.

Independent senior living and retirement communities offer numerous levels of services such as:

  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry service
  • Meals prepared by a chef in a dining room with wait staff and daily specials
  • Recreational activities, including wellness programs, day trips, continuing education classes, and much more
  • Local transportation
  • Security
  • Social events for entertainment and to facilitate making new friends!

In retirement and independent senior living communities you get to enjoy the privacy of your own apartment, which you furnish and decorate to your liking. The apartments are often equipped with standard safety features to make it easier to age in place. If and when a senior needs some assistance, care services may be available through the community. It is also common for residents to hire an outside agency to provide help with daily care needs.

Senior Living Options provides valuable advice about retirement communities throughout Connecticut and metro New York areas. We invite you to contact us to see how we can help you. Our services are FREE to seniors and their families

Assisted Living

Your Assisted Living and Elder Care Specialists

In our role as an elder care advisor, Senior Living Options offers both sensitivity and expertise about assisted living options. We are assisted living specialists with deep knowledge about crucial features, services, and levels of care.

Assisted living is a housing and healthcare alternative that balances independence with personal care in a warm and dignified community setting. An assisted living residence is a combination of individual apartments, as well as personalized care designed specifically for the individual residents care needs.

Assistance can be provided for activities of daily living (ADLs) in order to promote dignity and independence. This may include:

  • Bathing—stand-by or more assistance, if needed
  • Dressing—level of support will vary depending on need
  • Daily medication management
  • Mobility—cane, walker, scooter, wheelchair
  • Toileting and/or incontinence management
  • Access to health and medical services, such as physical therapy and occupational therapy

Not only do we help you select an assisted living community, Senior Living Options provides guidance as you work with your chosen facility’s on-site Care Director. The Care Director performs a personalized assessment of each incoming resident, which is used to create a customized, individual care plan that is reviewed in detail with the resident and/or family prior to moving in.

Our elder care advice has helped hundreds of seniors transition from their current home to an assisted living community. Senior Living Options’ specialized assisted living expertise covers Connecticut’s Fairfield, Litchfield, Hartford, Middlesex, and New London counties to New York’s metro boroughs and Westchester and Putnam counties. We invite you to contact us to see how we can help you. Our services are FREE to seniors and their families.

Typical amenities at assisted living communities:

  • Three meals a day in a dining room or restaurant-like environment
  • Housekeeping and personal laundry
  • Emergency call systems in each apartment
  • Daily social and recreational activities
  • Transportation for doctors’ appointments, religious services, shopping, errands, and scheduled outings
  • On-site hair salon, library, general activities room, computer access, and private dining room for family celebrations

Dementia/Alzheimer’s Care

Specialized Dementia Care and Alzheimer’s Care Advisors

Dealing with a parent or spouse with dementia or Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming and stressful. It’s comforting to have an Alzheimer’s care advisor on your side to help guide you through the process of selecting a dementia care community that can safely provide both residential and medical services. Senior Living Options offers support and expertise in sorting through the choices.

Many assisted living communities offer special services for the memory impaired. Dementia/ Alzheimer’s care is usually contained in a separate and secure part of a community where residents with memory loss are safe to move about freely. Often, the dementia care section also includes an enclosed outdoor living area. In addition, it is typical for a dementia care area to be designed for one-level living with dedicated common living areas and dining rooms, as well as with activities designed especially to support and engage memory care residents.

At Senior Living Options, features we also look for in the support of dementia and Alzheimer care residents include:

  • Interior space that is well lit and designed to have visual contrast between the floors, walls, and doorways, as well as areas for touch and sound sensory.
  • Customized supportive care plans and medication management plans based on the specific needs of the resident.
  • Staff specially trained and educated on memory care who can provide the highest levels of care, dignity, and independence to residents as possible.

Numerous families have turned to us as their dementia care and Alzheimer’s care advisor. Our extensive knowledge base covers all of Connecticut including Fairfield, New Haven, Hartford, and Middlesex counties; as well as Long Island, and Westchester and Putnam counties in New York. We invite you to contact us to see how we can help you. Our services are FREE to seniors and their families.
