The Face of Aging America Is Changing

April 30, 2018 Posted by Ann Jamison Senior Care No Comments

It’s not just wrinkles these days.

What are the new aging adults doing that is so different? For starters, the notion that they are all retiring at 65 and going to Florida is a bit false. Today’s aging adults are more active, have a higher income, and a higher level of education than seniors of the past. What does that mean, though? Well that means that their needs are shifting too!

4 Tips for Seniors to Stay Healthy and Living Longer

1.) Work Longer. Since 60 is the new 40, seniors are working longer and enjoying the interaction and challenge of the workplace. They are not ready to retire and let their brain rest. Today’s seniors are actively working their minds and contributing their experience and knowledge to companies. They are a driving force to influence and help the younger generation to stay just as strong.

2.) Eat Healthier. The current trend is eating healthier and “green,” and aging Americans are jumping on the bandwagon, too. Seniors are learning that eating healthy helps avoid chronic health conditions as you age. Not only does eating healthier help keep your body be strong and trim, but helps fuel the mind, too.

3. Be More Active Than Ever Before. Today’s aging adults are engaging in more than just a round of golf. We see seniors participating in 5Ks, 10K and even longer endurance run/walks. They are heading to gyms that offer anything from cycling to yoga. “Active Aging” is a lifestyle choice that is growing in popularity and keeping older adults healthier for longer.

4. Volunteer to Help Others. It goes without saying that volunteering and the socialization that accompanies volunteering keeps aging adults healthier. When you offer to volunteer, you feel good about yourself for helping others, not to mention the fact that you usually gain a sense of happiness and satisfaction from the socializing that comes along with it.

The face may have a few wrinkles or character marks as it grows older. However, the average aging American today is much more in tune with their body, mind, and overall health than they were just 20 years ago. Do you need some extra advice to help your aging loved one? Contact me at Senior Living Options and I will guide you to the right path after retirement!
