What is the Role of a Senior Care Advisor?

April 16, 2014 Posted by Ann Jamison Senior Care No Comments

Helping Families of Older Adults in Fairfield County, CT and Greater New York Explore Options for Senior Care

Finding care for an aging loved one can be a difficult journey. Most adult children are overwhelmed by the variety of senior care options that are available and don’t know how to go about figuring out which one might be the best. That is where a senior care advisor comes in. These local experts have experience working with each type of senior care from home health to assisted living and specialized dementia programs. In addition, they know which providers have the best reputation for providing quality care and a proven track record for client and resident satisfaction in your community.

Finding a Local Senior Care Advisor

If you work with a patient whose family is asking you for advice on how to find a Senior Care Advisor, you may be struggling to know what to tell them. While a quick Google search for your local community will likely turn up numerous options, there are a few factors to consider when choosing a Senior Care Advisor to help a family. They include:
How much experience does the advisor have in the industry?
Surprisingly, some that work for large, national companies have a background in sales but not much experience in senior living or senior care.
Is the advisor a local expert who is based in the area?
Some local areas, like greater New York and Fairfield County and New London counties in Connecticut, have many options. Families need to find an advisor that has been inside the assisted living communities they are suggesting, not one making recommendations from a corporate office several states away.
How much personal assistance does the advisor provide?
Ideally, most families would like to find an advisor who meets with them in person and accompanies them on assisted living community tours.
What fees are families expected to pay to an advisor?
There are a wide variety of payment models out there. Some charge by the hour and some are reimbursed by the senior care provider so there is no charge to families.

Have any of your patients and their families used a Senior Care Advisor?

Do you have an advice for families who are searching for one now?
